The following is a list
of advantages this sharpening "system" has over all others:
Angle of honing is set directly from a scale and is easily changed
The tool has no jig attached to it
The tool stays set and the stone is moved - a much easier motion
The stone can be used laterally and in a circular motion as
well as back and forth - therefore, the flatness of the stone
is not as critical as a back and forth motion, and the edge can
be made sharper and longer lasting
Much shorter and narrower stones can be used very effectively
The tool references on its back, which is the widest and flattest
side
Can hone angled edges as easily as straight
Can sharpen very short cutters as well as short cutter with
handles, such as butt chisels or Japanese chisels
Self-contained and portable-stones store inside of box
Can sharpen scraper blades at a true 90 degree angle very easily
and repeatedly - "filing" is done with a diamond stone
Jig is entirely waterproof for water-stone sharpening
How It Works:
The jig consists
of a box made of UHMW plastic that is both a honing surface and
a storage box for the stones. It has an adjustable angle block which
is set in relation to the top honing surface.
The tool
is set bevel side up on the angle block and against one of the workstops
and the other workstop is pushed against the other side. The tool
is positioned slightly above the corner of the angle block which
was positioned flush with the honing surface. During the initial
honing, where a bevel may need to be re-made or much pressure is
necessary, the double clamping workstop should be used to give hands
free clamping. For all subsequent honing with finer grit stones,
the user will find it unnecessary to wedge the iron and will place
it between the workstops while holding it by hand. Therefore, 'chasing
the wire edge' by moving between bevel side and back side honing
is very fast and convenient. The workstops have their forward edges
ground at an acute angle. For honing very short and thin blades
(BLUM plane blades for example), the blade is set in front of these
workstops and they are adjusted forward or backward so as to flush
out their edge the same as larger blades. By capturing the rear
of the blade in the angle of the workstop, it is effectively held
for honing and easily removed for backside honing and repositioned.
The side of the box has 2 additional workstops secured with thumbscrews.
By using these, a card scraper can be set in these work stops and
be adjusted slightly above the honing surface. This allows for quick
and accurate scraper sharpening and by using a diamond stone eliminates
the initial filing step.
